Wind Turbine Component Lifting Attitude Monitoring

Vigor developed a wireless inclination monitoring system to help crane operators observe the attitude of large wind turbine components during single- and dual-crane lifting.

WIND TURBINE COMPONENT LIFTING ATTITUDE MONITORING

PROJECT BACKGROUND

Wind turbine towers, nacelles and blades are large, heavy components that must be lifted and positioned accurately during installation. Wind farms are often built in exposed locations where wind and uneven terrain increase the difficulty of lifting operations. When a long component swings or tilts outside the intended position, installation can slow down and coordination between crane operators becomes more difficult.

THE MONITORING REQUIREMENT

The lifting team needed continuous attitude information from the suspended component. The solution had to support both single-crane and coordinated dual-crane operations, transmit measurements without adding long signal cables around the lifting area and present the angle clearly to operators and the site commander.

VIGOR SOLUTION

Vigor configured a wireless attitude-monitoring system using inclination sensors mounted on the lifting device or wind turbine component. The sensors measured the component's tilt during lifting and transmitted the data over a site wireless network to a solid-field display tablet.

The display allowed crane operators to observe the component attitude during the lifting process. A tower-style sound and light alarm could also be integrated to provide an immediate warning when the monitored angle approached a defined operating limit.

SYSTEM CONFIGURATION

- Measurement: real-time inclination and attitude of suspended wind turbine components
- Sensor location: lifting fixture or monitored component
- Communication: wireless LAN for on-site data transmission
- Operator interface: rugged field display tablet
- Alarm option: sound and light warning tower
- Operating modes: single-crane or coordinated dual-crane lifting
- Typical components: tower sections, nacelles and wind turbine blades

HOW THE SYSTEM WORKED

Before lifting, the inclination sensor and display were checked against the required reference position. During the lift, the sensor continuously transmitted attitude data to the operator display. The crane team could use the live reading to coordinate hoisting, reduce unintended tilt and respond to component swing before alignment became difficult.

For dual-crane operations, a common display of component attitude helped operators coordinate movement around the same measured reference. The monitoring system complemented visual observation by providing numerical angle data from the suspended load.

PROJECT VALUE

The wireless design reduced the need for temporary signal cabling across the work area. Continuous angle feedback improved visibility of the component's position and supported more controlled lifting and installation. The alarm function provided an additional layer of situational awareness when the measured inclination exceeded a project-defined threshold.

APPLICATION RELEVANCE

This solution is applicable to wind turbine tower erection, nacelle installation, blade lifting and other large-component handling tasks. It can also be adapted to heavy industrial lifting where the operator needs remote inclination feedback from a suspended load. Sensor range, response speed, wireless architecture and alarm thresholds should be selected for the lifting method and site conditions.
